What Is Crosstalk?

Crosstalk is defined as commenting on another's share or advice-giving during a meeting. At Key to Harmony, members can reply to another's member's share by clicking on the Reply button, which sends a private message to that member. Clicking on Reply All sends your reply to the individual to the entire membership and is considered crosstalk.

Some guidelines for avoiding crosstalk are: addressing the subject, but NOT the speaker who brought the subject up, speaking from one's own experience, and using "I" statements. This is known as placing principles before personalities. It also provides us the opportunity to keep the focus on ourselves.

What Does "Al-Anon Spoken Here" Mean?

Our group conscience has adopted the suggestions outlined in the pamphlet Al-Anon Spoken Here, published by Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., 1600 corporate Landing Parkway, Virginia Beach, VA 23454-5617, which discourages the following discussions in Al-Anon meetings:

  • Involvement in outside therapy or self-help groups.
  • The use of professional therapeutic terminology (such as "codependent").
  • Membership in other 12-step groups.
  • Finding, maintaining, and enhancing sobriety.
  • Expertise gained as a professional counselor, therapist, etc.
  • Religious, professional or any other outside affiliations.

To better understand why it is important to for us to maintain a nonprofessional approach, adhere to the principle of anonymity, and keep our focus on our common purpose, please read the pamphlet Al-Anon Spoken Here.

It is available free of charge at most face-to-face Al-Anon meetings, or is available from Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping Key to Harmony a healthy Online Al-Anon Meeting.
